On Saturday, Mark ventured out to Payne’s Prairie to run his first trail race, the Trail of Payne 10K. I stayed home to baby-sit Luke. It was a cool foggy morning and the prairie was a red glow as the sun rose. After a slightly unorganized start, Mark was in the middle of the pack running down the entrance road towards the sandy trail. The course was flat but a lot of areas with loose sand made it difficult to run. Mark started out fast but was able to maintain a 9:09 mile pace, resulting in a personal record 56:49! Finishing 121st out of 277. Although there were no coyotes on this trail, the sound of the pileated woodpecker and the sight of the bald eagle high atop a utility pole made this a race to remember.
